An icebreaker built for Polish Waters (Wody Polskie) in Szczecin by the Gdańsk-based Remontowa Shipbuilding yard. It is the sister ship of the “Ocelot” icebreaker. Katarzyna Figlewicz became the godmother of “Tarpan”.
The vessel has a specially profiled hull with a shallow draft (1.4 m), adapted to the variable and shallow bottom of the Oder River. The icebreaker is equipped with a hydraulically raised wheelhouse on a scissor lift system, which ensures optimal visibility for the captain during icebreaking operations. When passing under low bridges, the wheelhouse is lowered, and the hydraulically folding mast and removable railings allow for safe passage.
“Tarpan”, together with “Ocelot”, replaced the over 50-year-old, worn-out vessels “Świstak” and “Ogar” in the Szczecin fleet.
