The sailing vessel was built in 1907 at the Norwegian Mjellem & Karlsen shipyard in Bergen. Originally named “Njord”, she served as a steam lugger for herring fishing in the North Sea. Over the decades, she underwent numerous modernizations — in 1930 she was lengthened, and in 1952 the steam engine was replaced with a diesel engine.

A new chapter in her history began in 1989, when she was purchased by the Dutch shipowner Jaap van der Rest. The vessel underwent a thorough conversion into a luxury passenger sailing ship. The name “Loth Loriën” comes from the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and refers to an elven realm, literally meaning “Blossoming Dream”. Today, the ship sails as a three-masted brigantine, taking part in major tall ship gatherings across Europe.
