The Development of the Maritime School Complex in Darłowo — A Story in Itself.
The lug trawler Pelikan was built in 1953 at the Northern Shipyard in Gdańsk and was initially used for herring fishing in the North Sea. After changing owners several times, it was finally donated to the school in 1963, replacing Franek Zubrzycki, which had been decommissioned. With the change in ownership came a new name, and the vessel was christened Franek Zubrzycki II (DAR 205).
Its arrival at the school marked the beginning of major positive changes. In the 1970s, alongside the existing Vocational School of Marine Fisheries, a Technical School of Marine Fisheries was established. Renovations of school buildings and the student dormitory were undertaken, a gymnasium was constructed, and in 1977, a Vocational Technical School for Working Adults was launched, further expanding the institution’s educational offerings. Franek remains in use to this day, serving successive generations of young people preparing for maritime careers.
During training voyages aboard Franek, students perform navigational and engine room duties under the supervision of deck and engineering officers. They also carry out deck work under the guidance of an instructor and bosun, and assist with meal preparation under the supervision of the ship’s cook. The vessel is equipped for side trawl fishing.
