Born2sail – a staysail schooner built in 1974 in Surrey. Designed by Ed Dubois, Born2sail is made of… concrete. Ferrocement was a popular construction material in the 1970s, with origins dating back to World War II. Residents of Szczecin may be familiar with the hull of a small ship lying in Lake Dąbie, built in a similar way, occasionally hosting artistic events. Born2sail has sailed the Caribbean, Alaska, and the Mediterranean Sea, repeatedly proving that a well-built “concrete boat” is in no way inferior to hulls made of steel or polyester laminates. Over the years, many voyages have been made with young people, supported by an interior rebuild in 2009. Today, Born2sail is used mainly for private sailing around the waters of Bornholm.
